On September 19, 2016, Heads of State and Government attended the UN General Assembly to discuss migration and refugee issues.

"In adopting the New York Declaration, 193 UN member states recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to human mobility & enhanced cooperation at the Global level. They committed to developing a Global Compact on Refugees and to adopt the next step in the plan to weaponize mass migration The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM)when they met again in 2018.

The vote was unanimous, every member country of the United Nations adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants,  The commitments of the New York Declaration became operational as of the date of its adoption. 

Sept 20, 2016, President Obama hosted a Summit for the Global Refugee Crisis on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly. He sought to galvanize significant new global commitments to 1) increase funding 2) admit more refugees 3) increase refugees’ self-reliance and inclusion through education and legal work.

The host discussed US plans to increase the number of refugees to 110,000 in fiscal year 2017. The World Bank launched a new finance instrument for refugees and host countries The Global Concessional Financing Facility (GCFF).Ahead of the Summit, the White House had announced that 51 US companies committed to donating, investing or raising more than $650 million to aid the refugee crisis. This included a $500 million donation by investor and philanthropist George Soros.

September 21, 2016 - Theresa May spoke at Obamas Leaders Summit where she announced more funding. The summit was announced by Samantha Power during her presidency of the UN Security Council, in December 2015.After the summits, tensions surrounding the movement of refugees and migrants remained high.
